KidCo P203 Review

KidCo P203 Review by amy r "Amy R" (birmingham, Al)

My kids love their pea pod plus- my youngest was 1 when we bought it & now he is almost 3 & my oldest is 4. Both still use it to sleep in during travels or as special treat at home if been really good. The only issue is one of the pea pods we have mattress seam started leaking & you can't buy replacement. However I did finally contact Kidco and after 1 email I had new mattress in a week. Great customer support. If this happens to you don't waste time on Internet looking for replacement just email Kidco. Also be careful where you store pea pod wouldn't recommend 3 months in hot Attic- this may have been reason for our mattress having issues. I def. recommend this for kids travel bed. Buy early like infant so can get most use out of it. I think my son might grow out of it next year 5 or maybe 6.

KidCo P203 Review by Stephanie "Stephanie L." (Denver)

I needed a place for my 1 year old granddaughter to sleep when she was at my house. I came across this product while searching for travel beds and thought the price was great. It is extremely compact and can be used for years.

I read the compliants about the lack of a pump to inflat the mattress and lack of sleeping bag insert for this particular model before purchasing. I didn't care about the pump because we have several pumps already including a battery operated one due to camping. We recieved a pump, even though we were not expecting it. The pump is light and inflates the mattress easily. I am happy to see it since I told my daughter that she was welcome to take the pod if she traveled. Now we don't have to worry about how to inflate the mattress if we take it somewhere else.

As for the sleeping bag insert. It would be nice, but realistically detachable pieces get lost. A regular child size sleeping bag fits in well enough. I would also like to point out that it is not always cold enough to be comfortable inside a sleeping bag. I bought a fleece princesses blanket to lay on the bottom of the pod when she sleeps, and it works great. I liked this model because of the color, so it was ok for us not to have the sleeping bag. Others will have to choose what is important to them.

The one complaint that I have is that the screen part of the pod only unzips on one side. So there is only one way in and out, but some people might consider that a plus.

The one issue that we have had is that our granddaughter rolls a lot. The first time that she slept in it, she kept rolling into the sides. She would eventually get hot laying up against the side and start crying because it woke her up. We solved that problem by rolling up two Snuggies and putting the around the edges. The length runs down each side and the arms go across the top and bottom. I am sure more blanket could be used, but we had Snuggies laying around.

I am very happy with this product. My granddaughter likes it as well. We tend to leave it up even when she is not spending the night, so that she can play in it. She spends hours just crawling in and out of it. She will crawl in, look at us and smile. It seems to be her variation of peek-a-boo. So we consider the pod part toy as well.

KidCo P203 Review by whatever "whatever" (Colorado, USA)

This thing is great.
Pros
- Super easy to travel with. To keep it easy, before you go on a trip, be sure to:
a) Watch the video about how to fold it up!! Practice! Never force it! Pretty much just don't let your dear husband try to fold it.
b) Watch the video about how to fix it if it does get bent! Also on the KidCo website. Our tent "broke" while in Mexico and I almost had a nervous breakdown. We ended up dragging around this kaddywhampus tent, that would not fold down, shoving it in taxis and trunks, and getting it home forced into a suitcase. Somehow it survived all that and I was still able to reshape it. Voila. It works again.
c) Let your kid sleep in a couple of times at home. It is pretty different than a crib/packnplay. My pre-schooler begged to sleep in it (but he can just sleep in bed with us). Our baby (who we wanted to sleep in it) wasn't so sure...
d) don't open it up in front of your baby. Scary magic, like those freaky clown-faced jack-in-the-boxes that jump out at them...
- PHENOMENAL customer service at KidCo
- VERY well made

Cons
- Would be better with a sheet insert. Babies (or my baby) don't like the scratchy bottom. But, you can easily just put a standard crib sheet on the mattress and put the mattress inside the tent instead of in the zipper at the bottom. Of course, this may not be as good/safe for infants. If I ever get around to it, I'd like to make a little travel sheet to go in it (just sewing up the sides of a sheet so there's a little sleeping bag thingy).
- Would be great if both sides opened up for access.
- Some people don't like that this one does not have a self-inflating mattress. I don't know. We're major campers and our "self-inflating" mattresses never do (you need to store self-inflating mattresses inflated - who has space for that??). We end up blowing them up. So this is only a bit more effort to blow up. I suppose it would be nice to save a few breaths and have it at least start to inflate itself. I also don't like the plasticy feel of the mattress. Seems like a thermarest style material would be hardier/less full of volatile organic compounds...

For the price though, this is definitely the solution for travel and camping. Ours fits inside our tent for camping/boating trips, and it fits in small hotel corners for front-country travel. We bring it to our friend/family's houses too, just to keep baby used to sleeping in it. Fits in a suitcase - even fits in our carry-on sized roller (with forethought and a bit of very tender squishing).
